The festival formula: international touring

A workshop aimed at companies, producers and students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of how international touring works today.

Led by

Jonathan Holloway, artistic director and programming and strategy advisor for the Royal Docks Originals festival in London, the Gaillard Center in South Carolina and the World Cities Culture Forum.

About the session

Drawing on 30 years at the helm of the Perth International Arts Festival, the Melbourne Festival, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and the public programme at the Royal National Theatre in London, and on my current work as an advisor to institutions in Europe and the US, I will share what I look for when commissioning work: the visuals, the proposals, the technical clarity and that unique idea that makes a programmer pick up the phone.

The session is interactive and candid. We will map out the global markets, analyse the companies that have managed to build international careers and find out why, and examine models worth learning from.

The session will conclude with a group exercise in which three companies will be selected to take part in a ten-minute live discussion on how and where to go next, who to speak to first, and what a realistic three-year plan actually looks like.

Bring your questions, bring your scepticism, bring your ambitions. I hope that by the end of the session we’ll go home with a clearer idea of where in the world your work fits in and how to get it there.
